Give Yourself an Outlet for Your Frustration
I know a lot of poker players, who are smart, reasonable individuals in most cases, that have taken on an impossible task – trying to conquer their emotions. They view every beat they take as an opportunity to exercise self-control, disallowing themselves from feeling anything at all.
I applaud their logic one one level – letting one’s emotions get the better of oneself is a quick way to blow through a bankroll in poker. However, their logic is deeply flawed on another level – namely, that controlling your emotions completely is functionally impossible.
The alternative to their strict, solidly counter-productive approach is simple to provide yourself with an outlet for your frustrations. Recognize that you’re never going to be able to suppress the feelings entirely; rather, you must focus on releasing them as constructively as possible. Some people exercise, some people laugh, some people allow themselves a tiny moment of rage – whatever works for you to release negative emotions, find it, develop it and employ it as opposed to kidding yourself into thinking that you can control your emotions.
