Don’t Let Yourself Lie to Yourself

Poker players are great liars, at least most of them.  This skill comes in handy when you want to bluff, but it also means that you’re capable of bluffing yourself in some situations, often to your detriment.

When do poker players lie to themselves?  A good deal of the time, but mostly when they want to forget the pain of a bad session or a silly mistake.  Rather than deal with that annoying fact, many poker players will simply transform the fact so it’s easier to deal with –  they may lower the amount they lost, or come up with new circumstances to turn a horrible call into a great play that just didn’t work out.

Battle this tendency.  Keep good records of your sessions so you can never trick yourself into thinking you are more of a winning player than you actually are.  If you have hands where you had a big decision, store those hands as accurately and quickly as you can for later review.

Don’t lie to yourself.  It’s one bluff that you really should never want to be able to pull off.
