Always have a plan
Common sense? Absolutely. A rule that poker players forget 99% of the time? You bet.
Here it is, the golden rule of poker, absolutely free of charge: whenever you decide to commit to an action in poker, make sure you know what you will do next.
This includes knowing your options based on whatever your opponent might do. So, if you’re planning to bet the flop, be sure you know what you’re going to do if your opponent calls, and what you’ll do if he raises.
You should also know what your plan is for future streets. Of course, you can’t always predict exactly what will happen, you can’t always plan for 100% of the events that will occur following your action – but you can make sure you at least have a plan for the immediate reactions your opponent will have.
Have a plan and making decisions in poker will get insanely easier across the board.
