When choosing a seat in no limit cash game (at a full table), only consider posting to come in if you’re on the button or two spots to his right. And if possible, come in for a straddle. Even in a no limit game where the blinds are tiny compared to the stacks, it doesn’t make sense to overpay for the round. Just wait for the big blind and use the dead time to get a feel for each player’s skill level.
