Poker is Not a Way to Feel Better

Poker is a lot of things, but one thing it shouldn’t be used for is as a way to make yourself feel better when you’re going through a tough experience.  It’s tempting to approach poker this way –  after all, poker can be a lot of fun, and can be a great distraction from the things that bother you.

The trouble is that poker requires you to be emotionally balanced and stable, and if you’re playing poker as a way to escape from some negative emotions, there’s a good chance your feelings won’t be either.  If you have a good session and nothing goes wrong, then you may well feel better afterwards, but if you have some trouble in your session, then look out.

Beats you normally would have been able to deal with will now seem impossible to handle.  Your temper and tolerance for loss will both be fair more hair-trigger than on a normal day.  In short, you’ll be fine to play under the best of conditions, but if anything goes wrong, prepare for a brutal session that you’ll be unable to control –  and that will make you feel far worse and the end of it all.
