No Limit hold’em is not a background game
Poker is not an 85% game – especially not tournament or no limit poker. There are some jobs you can have where 85% effort and attention works – but poker is not one of them. Think of it this way – 12 minutes of terrible play can easily cancel out 48 minutes of your most brilliant poker maneuvering. Not to put too fine a point on it, but 12 minutes of terrible play can undo hours or weeks of solid play. Painting a house at 85% is ok – you’ll make some mistakes but you’ll still have progress to show and the mistakes can probably be corrected later. Sadly, poker does not allow do-overs. Except sometimes in PL Omaha, and even then not really.
